About Me

Hi, I’m Debbie — a qualified counsellor and registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
I am here to offer you a warm, compassionate and non-judgmental space where you can feel safe to explore whatever feels challenging for you right now. I know from personal experience, that seeking support can feel overwhelming and scary, so I do my best to create an environment where you will feel secure and at ease, and able to work at a pace that feels right for you.
I was drawn to this work because my own experience of therapy was deeply transformative and supported me in processing the difficulties I have faced in my own life. It helped me understand that healing doesn’t come from being told what to do, but from feeling truly heard by someone who doesn’t judge you but instead tries to understand life from your perspective. We may seek support from friends or family, but often there are things we hide because we fear judgement. Or they might jump in with advice when really all we need is to be seen and heard. In my experience, this is the power of counselling.
As an integrative counsellor, I draw from different therapeutic models, tailoring my approach to suit your individual needs. I can work with a variety of issues, so whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, bereavement or past trauma, I am here to listen and help you make sense of things, so that you can move forward in your life. I also work at an agency supporting people who have experienced sexual trauma and domestic abuse which has given me experience of working with complex trauma, and working in a trauma informed way to help keep client’s safe.

Common Reasons People Seek Counselling
There are many reasons someone might choose to reach out for support. You might recognise yourself in one of the areas below — or you might not be sure what’s going on yet, only that things don't feel right.
Anxiety
You may feel constantly on edge, overwhelmed by worry, or find it hard to switch off. Anxiety can show up in many ways — in the body, in racing thoughts, or in difficulty feeling safe or calm.
Low Mood & Depression
Some days might feel flat, grey, or numb. You may be struggling with motivation, energy, or a loss of interest in the things that usually bring joy. It can feel lonely — but you’re not alone.
Grief & Loss
Whether through bereavement, separation, illness, or life transitions, loss can shake our sense of who we are. Grief doesn’t follow a straight line — it’s a personal and unique experience for us all.
Trauma
Past experiences — whether one-off or ongoing — can stay with us in ways that are hard to name. You might experience flashbacks, emotional shutdown, or a deep sense of unease. Healing from trauma takes time, and you don’t have to do it alone.
Stress & Burnout
When life becomes too much, you might feel stretched thin or emotionally exhausted. Stress can affect sleep, focus, relationships, and your sense of self.
Relationship Struggles
Sometimes it’s hard to connect with others or to feel truly seen. You may notice patterns in relationships that feel confusing or painful — counselling can help gently explore these.
Low Self-Esteem
You might find yourself caught in self-criticism or feeling ‘not good enough.’ Together, we can begin to soften that inner voice and explore new ways of relating to yourself.
Feeling Stuck or Lost
Sometimes there isn’t a clear reason — just a sense that something isn’t right, or that you’ve lost touch with who you are. That in itself is enough reason to reach out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect from a counselling session?
I provide a space that’s safe and confidential — where you can bring whatever feels important, without pressure or judgment. We’ll move at your pace and explore things gently together. For more information read my post here.
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
You don’t need to be in crisis to seek support. If something feels difficult, overwhelming or confusing — or if you simply want space to reflect — counselling can help.
What issues do you work with?
I support adults with a range of issues including but not limited to anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. You're welcome to bring whatever you’re carrying.
How long does counselling last?
It’s different for everyone. Some people come for a few weeks, others for longer-term work. We’ll check in regularly to make sure the pace and focus feel right for you.
How much does it cost?
Sessions are 50 minutes and cost £55. I offer a free 20-minute call beforehand so we can get a feel for working together.
Do you offer concessions?
I hold a limited number of spaces where I offer discounted fees for individuals with low income.
Where are sessions held?
I offer in-person sessions from private rooms in the Shirley (SO15) area of Southampton. The space is easy to reach by bus or car, with free parking available both on-site and nearby. If it's more comfortable or convenient, I also offer sessions online or by phone — whatever works best for you.
Is everything I share confidential?
Yes — Everything you bring to counselling is held in confidence. I’ll go over how this works in our first session, including the few circumstances where I may have a duty to share information to keep you or others safe.
What if I feel nervous about starting?
That’s completely normal. It’s a big step to reach out. I’ll do my best to help you feel at ease, and we’ll go gently — there's no rush or expectation.
What is your approach to therapy?
My approach is both integrative and trauma-informed. This means I draw from a range of therapeutic methods, always guided by what feels most supportive for you — so our work can be flexible, personal, and responsive to your needs. Being trauma-informed means, I also pay close attention to how we build trust and safety together, making sure we move at a pace that feels manageable. You won’t be asked to open up before you’re ready — we’ll take things step by step, in a way that feels steady and supported.
How do I get started?
Getting started can be as simple as reaching out. Some people like to begin with a free 20-minute phone call — a chance to ask questions and see if it feels like a good fit. Others prefer to book an initial session and take it from there. Whatever feels right for you, just get in touch using the form in the Contact section. There’s no pressure or obligation.
